Some tourists have rather peculiar ideas and ride Transsib non-stop. The basic tour is of course Moscow-Irkutsk, from where one can get extention to Vladivostok, Ulanbatoor or Peking. Siberia has acquired a reasonable reputation of a vast land buried in deep snows for 6 months in a year. And no wonder that winter outdoors are very popular among locals with cross country skiing being number one in the list. All routes we selected run through beautiful landscape and range from 20 to 50 km long so you are free to choose an appropriate distance. Please note that early reservation is welcomed. Tour price starts from 2600 Russian roubles per person in a group of two persons.
6.Skiing trip in the Siberian wilderness (the sable lakes)
Being the largest freshwater basin on Earth Lake Baikal is too cold to offer a good swimming season. One of the few places where the water gets really warm are the so called “Warm Lakes” located in Snezhnaya river valley just 6 km away from the Big Sea. In Summer time this area is overcrowded with people but already in the second half of September it becomes lonely and in the mid of October you expect the first snowfalls. And as soon as they have started they never stop.
You will make your way to the Warm lakes on a snowmobile crossing the ice shell of Lake Baikal from West to East and spend the next day ice fishing on the Warm lakes. And if you choose to go for a walk in the forest make sure you have your hood on because the snowcaps on the trees are so impressive and heavy that a slightest push can cause a snow shower.

 Whenever somebody mentions the Altai usually gets a few blank looks from people. So look at the atlas and on the southern Russian border where Russia meets Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China you will find M't Belukha ( 14,784 feet).
This is the warmest part of Siberia, grapes are grown in Tyngur.
The Altai is unusual in that it combines the Taiga and alpine style peaks most around the 14,000 feet mark, from Tyngur it is a two day leisurely walk up the Akkem valley with the gear being carried on horseback, about halfway through the second day of the walk in you catch an unforgettable glimpse of the snow covered peak of Belukha through a gap in the dense trees, a few hours later the trees suddenly thin out and you walk into the broad Akkem valley and enter a walkers and mountaineers paradise. There is something here for everyone, the massive North face of Belukha rising nearly 4000 feet above the glacier will keep the ice climber happy as will the splendid walking and scrambling satisfy the soul of the person who just loves mountains and wild places for what they are.

We bet you do not know that there are hippopotamuses in Siberia:
...two hippopotamuses who escaped from an Omsk region zoo in South Siberia scared two fishermen to death when they emerged unexpectedly from a lake.
Although the two men didn’t actually die, they were given a serious fright upon waking up at the banks of a river where they had been fishing. The two fishermen, who were also a little drunk, woke up and saw two hippopotamuses, one, the female Malvina, in the middle of a yawn.

Tobolsk.
The major sight of the city is the Kremlin located on the high mount. In summer one can start travelling along the Irtysh and the Ob to the north, or reach the city by water transport from the south, from Omsk. It is quite time-consuming but is worth it as it produces strong impression.
Tobolsk – the former capital of Siberia
On the left bank of the Irtysh on the high mount stands the white-brick Kremlin with towers and cathedrals. A person travelling to the city from Tyumen can see it when he is many kilometers away. This Kremlin is a beauty and a pride of the former capital of Siberia, one of the most beautiful cities of the whole Russia - Tobolsk.

Yenisei.The 5,550 km Yenisey(also Yenisei) flows through Mongolia and Siberia, and is the fifth longest river in the world. It meanders through a range of landscapes including Mongolian steppe, canyons, taiga and tundra. Its headwaters form on the flanks of Otgon Tenger, a sacred 13,000 foot mountain in central Mongolia, and it terminates at the Arctic Ocean at 70 degrees north.

The Tale of the Irtysh-river.
Immeasurable are treasures of Old Man Altai. Day and night formidable sharp-toothed rocks are guarding his riches. Day and night spruces and cedars are watching tirelessly everywhere around, lest a thief should approach Altai’s secret bins and treasuries. Old Man Altai couldn’t help grieving, that someone might find out where his treasure is hidden. And he complained to his good neighbour Tien Shan: “I wish I had a son. With his help I would save my treasure from the man’s eye”.
And at last Old Man’s wish came true. His wife – The Ice Maiden – gave birth to their son. As a small drop emerged he from a stone chink in a hollow and began to grow as fast as you only can imagine.
So strong and good he became that it was pleasure to look at him. He felt great power surge through his body.
Soon young Irtysh grew so lively and strong that his father’s home became too small for him. The entire hollow he churned up, no unsullied place left. And for that they called him The Land-Digger – Irtysh (in Turkic “ir” means “land” and “tysh” – “to dig”).

 FRASER. REAL SIBERIA by John Fraser who wrote may be the best reports about Siberia and the Transsib some 100 years ago which you somehow read as if it were today! Best pasture lands in the world in Omsk, gold rush in Irkutsk, Britisch ferries at lake Baikal, Russian Cities in China and remote Vladivostok, etc.
INTRODUCTION
This volume lays claim to give nothing more than personal impressions of a journey made across Siberia and through Manchuria in the autumn of 1901.
I went to Siberia on a mission of curiosity, with the average Britisher's prejudice against things Russian, and with my eyes wide open to see things I might criticise and even condemn.
If, however, I found little to bless in the great land beyond the Urals, I also found very little to curse. Through generations there has grown up in the public mind the idea that Siberia is a land of snow and exiles. There is much that is thrilling in stories of innocent prisoners, weary and starving, being driven through blinding storms with the whips of brute officials to urge them on. Yet the public, I am afraid, rather like that sort of thing, and a succession of writers have ministered to their appetite for sensation. So only one phase of Siberian life - a slight and a passing phase has been depicted.
Nurtured largely on such books, I went to Siberia half expecting to feed on horrors, and with the intention of writing one more volume to show how cruel the Russian is. Of course I saw much to condemn. But I saw something else. I saw that the popular idea about Siberia is altogether wrong. I saw a land capable of immense agricultural possibilities, great stretches of prairie waiting for the plough, huge forests, magnificent waterways and big towns, with fine stores, with great hotels, with electric light gleaming everywhere; in a word, instead of a gaunt, lone land, inhabited only by convicts, I saw a country that reminded me from the first day to the last of Canada, and the best parts of western America.
I look upon Siberia as the ultimate great food-producing region of the earth. The building of the mighty Trans-Siberian Railway has attracted the attention of traders. Americans and Germans are already in the country opening up commerce. Britishers, however, lag behind.
The title of this book is 'The Real Siberia,' because I endeavour to show that the Siberia of convicts and prisons is passing away, and the Siberia of the reaping machine, the gold drill, the timber yard, the booming, flourishing new town, is awakening into life.
Some of my conclusions may be wrong. But I looked about and kept my ears open. I am too small a man to pose either as a friend or enemy to Russia, I am simply a man who went out to see, and I have written about what I saw. Whatever be the faults of this book, it is, at least, an honest record.
